Experience Arizona history this summer! The Arizona Preservation Foundation, Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, and the City of Prescott cordially invite you to the celebration of Arizona's 100th year history.

Mark your calendar for the 10th Annual Arizona Historic Preservation Conference. This year's conference, "100 Years of Living History," has been scheduled for June 13 - June 15, 2012, in Prescott, Arizona.

The meaning behind this event will provide the optimal opportunity for other preservationists to collaborate. Hear about the issues and be present when ideas and success stories are brought to light.

Be a part of sharing the common goal of preservation issues that face all of us. You can make a difference by being a part of the proposed solutions that will help preserve our desert and the communities at large who believe that being proactive will help preserve communities.

Some of the speakers scheduled at this event include Kimber Lanning, Director of Local First Arizona and Dr. Jonathan Mabry, Historic Preservation Officer for the City of Tucson.

Session topics at the engagement will include Cultural Heritage Tourism and Urban Sustainability.

If you would like to see the entire list of speakers including the conference agenda for that day, you can go to their website or contact them by email at questions@azpreservation.com

Share the love on Mothers Day! Help give any donation or gift to all of the furry little creatures out there who need your assistance.

If you can help a homeless animal in need of a new home, please consider doing so.

The shelter in Sedona is looking for foster parents for the rescues and shelters participating in this event.

They are also trying to find people who might be interested in adopting a new little furry friend! This event will take place at the Red Rock Pet Adoption event in Sedona.

Free Parking with free admission. There will be plenty of on-site demonstrations, contests, and many other activities planned for the day!

Check out their auction items, too! There will be games and prizes, talented artists on hand, and if you have been thinking of micro-chipping or vaccinating your pet, now is your chance. They are going to have low-cost micro-chipping and vaccinations to help protect your pet!

This event will take place Saturday, May 12th 9 AM - 3 PM at the Posse Grounds Park in Sedona.

Show your support and love through Red Rose Inspiration for Animals.

All of the donated proceeds will go toward spaying and neutering animals who are in need. For more information, you can also call them at (928)282-5278.

Help these little ones and show them you care!

**I rescued a cat less than two-years ago and I have never once regretted it. He is the most loveable little guy. I named him Tucson, by the way! I already had a cat named "Phoenix" so that is how he got his name. I guess a "Sedona" will have to be the name of the next one!

I do not know anyone who particularly likes road construction BUT...

There is some good news!

Soon, West Valley commuters will be able to have more options when it comes to getting around the valley.

ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation) is gearing up to begin work on two stretches of the Loop 303. This will soon mean a six-lane freeway.

The State Transportation Board has awarded contracts totaling $96.6 million dollars. The monies will help fund two separate stretches of the Loop 303.

You can expect these projects to begin this summer, 2012.

How long will it take you ask?? Well, this is no quick project but the estimates are that they will finish up the projects Summer and Fall of 2014.

Just remember, it will be worth the wait!

Hard to believe this... but it is estimated that less than 1% of ALL plastic bags are recycled!

Please, consider recycling your plastic bags. Our future generations depend on all of us being more "green."

Watch the short flash demonstration for some very real facts when it comes to the need for us to be more Arizona green.

By the way, most grocery stores will recycle your bags. I typically take mine to both Bashas' and Food City where they always have the recycling bins near the front entrance.

Did you know that this is actually Arizona’s very first State Park,
Arizona’s oldest European community,
the oldest as well as the best preserved Spanish Colonial Presidio site in Arizona?

This Historic State Park has preserved its history for all tourists to be able to appreciate.

Established way back in 1752, the Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac, is known as the first European settlement that would later became the state of Arizona. Interesting tidbit!

Where: You can access the park in the Tubac village itself.

They have a lot of ongoing educational events so check their site for times and events!

Glendale Jazz Festival

If you like Jazz, check this out...

Glendale is holding its 29th Annual Jazz and Blues Festival TODAY!

They have a great lineup planned!

Plenty of local and national entertainment begins at 12 PM - 10 PM TODAY!

Many musicians will be there such as:

Kenny Garrett

Marcia Ball

Carmen Lundy

Bernard Allison Group

To give you an idea of the awesome talent that will be on hand, Kenny Garrett Quartet will be there... what an artist.

The jazz headliner for (TONIGHT) Sunday night, scheduled from 4:30 - 6 PM

He is a Grammy-Award winning American post bop jazz saxophonist and flautist, gained fame as a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Miles Davis' band as a young man.

This musician has had a very successful career and has produced nearly 20 albums.

Marcia Ball also takes the stage from 4:30-6 PM showing off her roadhouse-rhythm-and-blues-party style.

Ball's groove-laden New Orleans boogie and rollicking Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music fans all over the world. The Boston Herald says, "Ball plays masterful, red hot tracks from the Texas-Louisiana border. Her voice can break your heart with a ballad or break your back with a rocker."

If you like Blues...

Bernard Allison Group will light your fire...

The blues performer rocking the stage on Saturday night will be the Bernard Allison Group, from 8:30-10 PM

Legacy Bernard Allison totes the same smokin’ six string shooter that his late father Luther Allison assaulted the blues with; and he is blessed with his father’s soulful voice, spiritual devotion and a musical freedom, which experiments with the blues.

Carmen Lundy

On the jazz stage rounding out the entertainment Saturday evening, from 8:30-10 p.m., is Carmen Lundy.

Most recently recording her twelfth album, according to The New York Daily News, “Lundy is one of those rare performers who does it all: She sings, plays multiple instruments, and…except for one song — “A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square” — Lundy penned all of the tunes on her latest project, now No. 5 on the JazzWeek radio charts. She composed several numbers on guitar, a new instrument among the many she plays.”

They are also giving away a Gibson guitar that is valued at $1,800! This giveaway celebrates the 29th annual Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival April 14-15.

To enter, all you need to do is simply "like" the Arizona’s Best Festivals® page on Facebook... Look for the "Contests" link for the rules.

If you are the luck (random) winner, you will be notified on or about April 18th, 2012.

The Arizona IBA Program has completely redesigned their website and it is better than ever!

This new website features much more information about Arizona’s Important Bird Areas as well as highlighting how volunteers can get involved with the program.

Each of Arizona’s 42 IBAs has its own profile page, complete with a description, data analysis, photos of habitat and birds along with 2 GIS maps of that IBA at the bottom.

To help get potential volunteers excited there is also an IBA blog, a history of the IBA program in Arizona and a “Like” widget that links back to the official Arizona IBA Facebook page.

There is also a great calendar of events that shows all of the volunteer survey opportunities as well as IBA events.

The new website still features the same resources for surveyors as the original. All data sheets and protocols are available and there is a portal to the AZ IBA database.
